	Here is an example of a given Bass harmonized in accordance with the two fore­going Principles:
	In playing this example do not observe the Ties ( -—- ). These are simply used to indicate the employment of notes common to two successive chords. It will be observed that no two chords are used in succession in the same position. Notes com­mon to two successive chords are retained, except at (a). The following exercises should be harmonized by the student. Write out each exercise complete, then try it over and listen carefully. It should conform to the fore­going Principles and it must sound well. If it is not satisfactory, do it over again. Remember that each Bass Note given is to be the Root of a Common Chord ; no two Chords are to be used consecutively in the same Position; retain, as far as convenient, notes common to two successive chords in the same parts or voices. The Root in the Bass decides what Chord shall be used, the student must decide what Position is best. In the latter case something is left to the taste and judgment of the individual. What does not sound well should not be written. Now for some real constructive work.
